Shift Handover

Overview/Abstract

Shift handover is a formal passing of control from one crew to the next. The main objectives are a formal handover of responsibility/accountability and good transition of ongoing activities.

Key Elements

  • Structured routine for handing over.

  • Key information sharing.

  • Formal change of accountability.

Expected Outcomes

  • Oncoming crew understands exact plant conditions and current plant performance.

  • Formal handover of operating strategy for continuity.

  • Oncoming crew understands actions in progress, abnormal conditions, and equipment out of service.

  • Formal transfer of ownership from one crew to the next.

What to do & Why

What to Do

Why

For each production role, build a structured handover process. Identify all the critical process information necessary for transfer of control and develop a checklist to guide people through the process.

Oncoming crews only know plant conditions from their most recent time on shift. This process makes sure everyone has the current information, that all key information is reviewed and the the oncoming crew is in the best position to execute the production strategy for their shift.

Have a formal signoff on transfer of control with signatures of both the oncoming and leaving team members.

Formal passing of control

Process supervision should routinely change shift ahead of the crews so they can complete their handover prior to crew change.

Oncoming supervision has an opportunity to clarify plant conditions with the “old” crew to follow up on any lingering questions

Oncoming supervision can watch over the handover process and make sure his crew is getting thorough, complete, quality information.
